Award-winning films & documentaries

Allegro Films is a ground-breaking independent production company based in London, renowned for creating compelling factual content with passion and pedigree.

Who We Are

Established in 1968, Allegro Films was among the UK’s first independent production companies. We produce films, documentaries and series for all screens and platforms around the world.

We have won multiple awards (including a BAFTA and International EMMY), most renowned for our intimate take on classical music and musicians, past and present. Our founder was the pioneering film-maker Christopher Nupen, who established our reputation and core values. Nowadays, our scope extends to a broader desire to tell human-led stories about the arts, culture, humanity and the wonderful - albeit imperilled - world we inhabit.

For clients and organisations, we immerse ourselves in their business, to create tailored content with impact and authenticity.

Allegro Films is proud to have produced a new feature-length (90 minute) film for the PBS network in the United States.

Introduced and narrated by grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy, tells the definitive story of the enigmatic cellist, whose career was cruelly curtailed by multiple sclerosis when she was just twenty-eight years old. It is full of candid moments off-stage and in rehearsal, together with powerful concert performances. The film’s charismatic cast of interviewees provide an incomparable insight into why the affection for du Pré and the wonder at her playing remains undiminished, nearly forty years after her death in 1987.

Our founder Christopher Nupen, invites us to share his view of Listening through the Lens.

Published by Kahn & Averill, the autobiography shares its title with the film and tells the story of his varied and often astonishing life.

A musician himself, with a love of the classical guitar and an encyclopaedic knowledge of music, he made lifelong friends with his subjects, who included Daniel Barenboim, Jacqueline du Pré, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Nathan Milstein, Andrés Segovia, Yevgeny Kissin, Karim Said, and Daniil Trifonov.

In the words of music critic and author, Norman Lebrecht, Nupen was the David Attenborough of the musical jungle. He dedicated his life to preserving music on film and remains an enduring inspiration.

Thank you to our online community and our partner Nikita Ventures, who together, have steered us over the 100k subscriber threshold!

We appreciate every view, like and comment.

The Youtube platform is a wonderful library for our archive material and there are a lot of old film cans and tape formats in storage that we have yet to digitise. It’s a lengthy process but we will get there, to grow our channel.

Music Films

From the start, Allegro Films pioneered a style of film-making that blended documentary and musical performance.

Our music film archive serves as a memory bank that recalls the talents and personalities of many of our most celebrated musicians, together with the ideas of the great composers. We have always had a commitment to quality, both in terms of our storytelling and the spirit of our collaborations. We work with extraordinary people on both sides of the camera, to create films with integrity and empathy. Nearly 60 years since our first film, we still love our work.
